Annual Life Science Startup Symposium by Pismo Ventures
Join them Tuesday, June 13 and Thursday, June 15, 2023 from 8:30AM to 3:30PM online.
What do investors look for?
The basic answer to the question is quite obvious of course. When it comes to early-stage startup investing, digging in a bit more may help. Most early-stage investors are interested in a return on investment (ROI) that translates into multiples on their original investment. The magic multiple is 10X+. There are many reasons why 10 is this magical minimum number. Most importantly, it is because most investments (85%+) are lost. In order to make up for lost investments, investors look for opportunities where they believe the return will be at least 10 times their original investment.
Some investors may appreciate dividend payments, but ultimately companies seeking investor capital must have an exist strategy. Generally, there are 2 ways to exit: commercialize prior to exit or exit before commercializing. In either case, buyers may be financial or strategic. For the most part, life science startups exit prior to commercialization and for obvious reasons.
Can your startup deliver on the promise of at least 10X return? Are you able to attract enough early-stage investors in this challenging economic climate to launch or sustain operations?
